If you want to get PAN card, the first thing you want to do is to fill the PAN application form. Form No. 49A is the application for the allotment of Permanent Account Number for Indian Citizens/ Indian Companies/ Entities incorporated or unincorporated in India under section 139A of the Income Tax Act, 1961.  Indian residents who want to apply for PAN should fill Form 49A in order to get PAN. The PAN application form is available in online in the e-Governance official portal NSDL and in UTIITSL. Once you have filled the application form, you need to attach necessary documents and photograph and should make payment in online.

How to get Form 49A?

  • Applicants can get the application form for PAN (Form 49A) from any IT PAN Service Centres which were managed by UTIITSL, TIN-Facilitation Centres or PAN Centres managed by NSDL e-Governance.

What are the elements of Form 49A?

The PAN application form consists of 16 elements. Given below are the 16 elements which constitutes the PAN application form.

1. AO Code:

In the AO Code section, you need to fill the Area Code, AO Type, Range Code and AO No. You can find these details in the websites of PAN service providers.

2. Full Name:

  • Individuals should select appropriate title and write their Last Name, First Name and Middle Name separately in block letters.
  • Non-Individuals should write their name from the first block of last Name and if the name is longer, they can continue to the first and middle name.
  • For company, the name should be written without abbreviation.

3. Abbreviation of the Full Name:

  • Individuals should write the abbreviated name that should be printed on the PAN card. The abbreviated name should contain the last name.
  • For Non-Individuals, the abbreviated name should be written from the first block of last name.

4. Other Name:

If you have any other name, select 'Yes' and provide details of your other name by selecting appropriate title and by filling last name, first name and middle name.

5. Gender:

It is compulsory for Individuals to select their gender in this field. Non-Individuals can leave this field blank.

6. Date of Birth/ Date of Incorporation:

  • Individuals need to mention their date of birth in this field.
  • In the case of company, they need to mention the date of incorporation.
  • For Association of Persons, it is the date of formation
  • For trusts, it is the date of creation of Trust Deed
  • For Partnership firms, it is the date of partnership deed
  • For LLPs, it is the date of registration
  • For HUFs, it is the date of creation and for ancestral HUFs, if the date of creation is not available, then the date can be mentioned as 01.01.0001.

7. Details of Parents:

  • This field should be filled only by the Individual applicants. Select whether your mother is a single parent and you wish to apply by providing your mother name only.
  • If you select 'Yes', then provide only your Mother's Name.
  • If you select 'No', then provide only your Father's Name.
  • If the applicant is a married woman, she should have to provide only her Father's Name.
  • Select the name of either father or mother which should be printed on the PAN card. If no option is selected in this field, then the option which you have selected earlier will be applied.

8. Address:

  • It is mandatory for Individuals/ HUF/ BOI/ AOP/ AJP to fill the residential address. Others should leave this field blank.
  • Individuals having salary or Business/ Profession as source of income should mention the name and address of the office.
  • Firm, LLP, Company, Local Authority and Trust should mention the office name and its address.
  • It is mandatory for all applicants to mention the full address and details of the Town/ City/ District, State/ Union Territory and Pin Code.
  • If foreign address is provided, the Country name along with its ZIP Code should also be mentioned. 

9. Address for Communication:

  • Individuals/ HUF/ BOI/ AOP/ AJP should mention either office or residential address.
  • Other applicants should mention their office address for communication. You will be communicated in this address.

10. Telephone Number and Email ID:

  • Applicants should mention either their telephone number or email ID for communication of any mistake in the application and to receive PAN via email. 
  • While providing telephone number, you should indicate ISD and STD code. In case you are providing mobile number, you need to indicate the country code. Application status will be sent via SMS to the mobile number mentioned in the form.

11. Status of the Applicant:

This field is compulsory for all category applicants. If the applicant is LLP, the PAN will be in 'Firm' status.

12. Registration Number:

  • This field is not necessary for Individuals and HUFs. However, this field is mandatory for 'Company'.
  • Company should indicate the registration number allotted by the Registrar of Companies.
  • Other applicants should indicate the registration number allotted by the State/ Central Government Authority.

13. Aadhaar Number:

  • As a proof of Aadhaar, the applicant should provide a copy of Aadhaar card/ letter.
  • If the applicant does not have Aadhaar card, he/she can provide the copy of Enrolment ID. 
  • The name of the applicant in the form should be the same as the name appears in Aadhaar/ EID.

14. Source of Income:

  • The applicant should select any one source of income given in the form.
  • If the applicant selects Income from Business/ Profession, the two-digit code should be mentioned in the form.

15. Details of Representative Assessee:

  • This field is mandatory for applicants who are minor, mentally retarded or deceased. Such applicants can be represented through Representative Assessee.
  • The name and address of the representative assessee should be mentioned along with their proof of address and proof of identity.

16. Documents to be attached:

All applicants should attach any one proof of identity, proof of address and proof of date of birth with the application form. The documents should bear the name of the applicant. The documents attached should be mentioned in this field.

What are the documents to be attached with Form 49A?

For Individuals and HUF:

As per the Rule 114 of Income Tax Rules, 1962, Indian citizens who belong to Individual and HUF categories need to attach a copy of any one proof of identity, proof of address and proof of date of birth with the PAN application form.

  • Driving License
  • Voter ID
  • Ration Card
  • Arm's license
  • Pensioner Card
  • Bank Certificate
  • Photo ID Card provided by Central/ State Government

Proof of Address:

  • Aadhaar Card
  • Passport
  • Driving License
  • Voter ID
  • Post Office Passbook
  • Domicile Certificate issued by the Government
  • Employer Certificate
  • Bank account statement
  • Credit card statement
  • Utility bill

Proof of Date of Birth:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Mark sheet from recognized board
  • Passport
  • Driving License
  • Domicile Certificate issued by the Government
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Voter ID
  • Photo ID card provided by the State/Central Government
  • Pension payment order

Other than Individuals and HUF:

For applicants other than Individuals and HUF, a copy of the registration certificate should be attached with the PAN application form.

Company: Registration Certificate issued by the Registrar of Companies

Partnership Firm: Registration Certificate issued by the Registrar of Firms or Partnership deed

Limited Liability Partnership (LLP): Registration Certificate issued by the Registrar of LLP

Association of Persons (Trust): Registration Certificate issued by the Charity Commissioner or Trust deed

Association of Persons (AOP), Body of Individuals (BOI), Local Authority or Artificial Juridical Person (AJP): Agreement or Registration Certificate issued by the Charity Commissioner or Registrar of Cooperative Society or any other competent authority or any other document from State/ Central Government.

How to fill Form 49A?

  • The PAN application form should be filled in block letters in English only. Applicants are not allowed to fill the application form in any other languages. It is preferable to fill the application form using black ink.
  • Only one character should be filled in a box. After each word, leave a box blank.
  • Individual applicants should affix two recent passport size coloured photo with white background, in the space provided in the application form. The image clarity in the PAN card will depend on the clarity of the photograph pasted in the form.
  • The signature/ left hand impression should be made on the left side of the form in such a way that it should be on the photo and form as well.
  • The signature/ left hand impression should be made within the box provided on the right side of the form. The signature should not be made on the photo. Any mark which affects the clarity of the photo will be rejected. 
  • If thumb impression is made, it should be attested properly by the Magistrate/ Notary Public/ Gazetted Officer with official seal and stamp.
  • Avoid overwriting and ensure that you have filled all the details correctly as incorrect application will be rejected.
  • The application form should be signed by the applicant in the case of Individual, Karta in the case of HUF, Director if it is Company, Authorized Signatory in the case of Association of Persons, Body of Individuals, Local Authority and Artificial Juridical Person, Partner in Firm/LLP, Trustee in Trust, Representative Assessee in the case of minor or mentally retarded. 

What is the processing fee for PAN Application?

  • The applicant needs to pay Rs. 107 (including GST) to get physical PAN. The applicant should pay an additional charge of Rs. 910 to dispatch PAN Card outside India.
  • The applicant should pay Rs. 72 (including GST) if physical PAN is not required. The applicant should mention 'Physical PAN Card not required' on the top of the application form. It is mandatory for the applicants to provide email ID to get e-PAN Card.
